Reading it was definitely a labor of love for me. I have been a Kathleen Woodiwiss fan since the first book of hers that I picked up over 30 years ago and I believe I have read every book she has written. My heart broke when she passed away a couple of years ago because I knew there would never again be another new Woodiwiss to snuggle into a chair wjnd and read for hours. She was survived by two sons, Sean and Heath, their wives, and numerous grandchildren. She is able to keep up this sham for a good portion of the book.

Then and there I fell in love with this book. Essentially, the romance handicaps them from thinking and acting logically, especially Cole. Mystery and suspense coincide this burgeoning romance in part two up in Minnesota. Okay I guess I am ready to write my review for this book. She plays many parts and Woodiwiss does them all so well. She gave them an alternative to Westerns and hard-boiled police procedurals. When a man and a woman begin to understand each other, love begins small and grows with the passage of time. The book follows Alaina, her adventures and her thoughts much more closely than Cole’s, all in the context of the American Civil War.


When Alaina sees her virgin blood, she runs from the room as Cole sleeps away his injury and inebriation after taking Alaina’s virginity. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. I will have to read other KEW books in the future, and I wonder if there’s other civil war love stories out there.

I found the book’s attempts to describe the civil war an anemic affair, and the focus firmly rests on Alaina and her struggle. The beginning, and most, of the story takes place in Louisiana especially New Orleansand ends in Minnesota.

How do I open the book? It will be simpler if you’re bathed here. It had lent well to her disguise. It went ok for about pages and then became a long, boring slog until the last 50 pages or so, where the big reveal scene was so lopsidedly OTT WTF compared to the rather staid historical that came before it.
